As it Cooks: Happy Birthday #1

Yikes!

As it Cooks is 1, folks!

Here’s my question for you. How did you or how would you celebrate your blog’s first anniversary?

There are a few options. Nothing fancy. Bear in mind, it’s going to be in the Great Plains.

Option 1: An inviting piece 0f dark chocolate and a juicy, fluffy raspberry dedicated to As it Cooks which is dedicated to me? Verdict: In a jiffy, the black beauty and the red beast disappeared into thin air.
Option 2: According to a friendly manager of a Mexican restaurant on Route 66,  the new special combo fajitas was “out-of-this-world must-try”. Ready for a bomb of a surprise, Mr. Chi-Town placed the order. It came like this. I flipped.
It was a muted combo. The exciting sounds and smells of sizzling meat were missing. The contraption, made of iron, was probably the new, I don’t know, hotplate? Representatives from the land, the ocean, even the dessert were either grilled or deep-fried were there: Chicken, beef, pork chops, shrimps, rib tips, carnitas, wedged potatoes,  green peppers, and not to mention, a fluffy cactus leaf. Overwhelmed, I downed the salsa. (I’ve never had cactus before, so for the first time ever, I took a bite of it. Cooked sour cucumber/zucchini. That’s how it tasted like.) Verdict: It was a new experience. Will opt for the usual back-to-basics beef and shrimp fajitas the next time.

But what about a “fiesta-like” restaurant? You know like fiesta-every-day Mi Tierra in San Antonio? It’s wild! The lovely waitresses, young and old, busy and sweaty, always dressed in colorful reds and flair skirts as if they are ready for a serious flamenco. On seeing the crowd, the friendly mariachis with manly-moustaches come strolling around in their fancy sombreros with their violins, guitars, and ear drum-busting trumpets. Of course with a good tip, Mr. Chi-Town can get the mariachi gang to belt out their best number and make my blog blush red like the color of fresh salsa.

Nah. Maybe that’s going a little overboard. It’s As it Cooks first birthday for blog’s sake!

Then the unexpected happened.

During Women Speak, a beautiful and incredibly talented young lady from the Middle East talked about “hendi” (she cleverly coined the words “henna” and “mehndi”). Shyly, she showed her henna-drawing prowess. Talk about an “aha hendi” moment.

‘Twas the day I got hendi-ed! 🙂
Shukran, Wejdan. Love it!  🙂

Happy Birthday, As it Cooks!  Though you’re still under construction, I’m already dreaming of a colorful hendi-mariachi fiesta for your Big 2. The gentlemen below know how to create a birthday fiesta. Big time!Wouldn’t it be a wild mariahendi? ‘Ole!

So tell me. How did you celebrate your blog’s first anniversary? Or do you have an unforgettable henna, hendi, mehndi, or even a mariachi story?

Mucho love,

Tee
